With rounded corners, a relatively narrow bezel, and a glossy black frame, the 42-inch JVC LT-42J300 LCD HDTV ($1,099.95 list) isn\'t bad-looking. The set boasts high energy efficiency and improved contrast and color accuracy over previous JVC LCDs we\'ve seen--and it\'s competitively priced. But this set comes up short with poor handling of a common HD video format, which could be a deal breaker depending on what you watch. The 1080p screen resolution is ideal for displaying today\'s highest-quality HD video sources, including Blu-ray movies, but with a 60-Hz refresh rate this set won\'t eliminate judder when playing 24p video the way most 120-Hz sets can. The set\'s white balance using the Theater picture preset was relatively neutral at the midpoint but a bit cool (bluish) toward the peak-white end of the scale. In testing, he LT-42J300 produced near-perfect color levels when compared with the standard used in HD video production--a significant improvement over the wildly exaggerated colors of past JVCs. LCD HDTVs are known for energy efficiency, but with an estimated operating cost of $2.08 per month (118W average) the LT-42J300 beats out nearly every other LCD we\'ve seen in terms of operating cost per screen area, based on 5 hours of daily use at $0.1135 per kWh (the 2008 national average). The LT-42J300 surpasses current Energy Star guidelines by more than 30 percent--and it earns our GreenTech Approved award. For more info, read the full review on PCMag.com.
