| Toshiba claims that the 22-inch 22AV500U is as an ideal \"transition\" TV for next month\'s digital television switchover, and this affordable set is capable of producing a pleasing, detailed picture complete with accurate colors. Although picture contrast wasn\'t quite as high as on some competing models, solid energy efficiency and an affordable price make it a good choice for a first-time HDTV buyer who doesn\'t need (or want) a huge screen.
It shouldn\'t come as a surprise that this small 22-inch set doesn\'t consume much energy, but its estimated operating cost of $0.84 per month (41W average) is significantly less than Energy Star\'s guidelines for a display of this size. Our cost estimate is based on 5 hours of daily use with default picture settings at $0.13/kWh (a San Francisco average).
